Simple, routine
care of your espresso machine is your best
defense against poor quality espresso shots.
Here are a few simple tips for keeping your
espresso machine in top condition.
Daily:
After steaming each pitcher of milk, wipe
off the steam wand with a damp towel you have
designated for the steam wand only. Remove
all traces of milk and clear the wand of stray
milk by turning the steam on and once more
allowing the steam to spray into the tray
and blowing out the residue milk.
Keep your group handles and Portafilter baskets
clean. Knock "used" grounds from
the Portafilter and rinse. Always store the
Portafilter in the group head when not in
use (this helps keep the temperature in the
group consistent to help you brew a better
shot).
Wipe the screen of your group head with a
damp towel to remove excess grounds.
Take a teaspoon and lever out the used basket
from within the portafilter handle, wash the
excess coffee oils from inside the handle
and on the back of the basket keeping it fresh.
Weekly:
Depending on your usage level (number of drinks)
back flushing the system is recommended.
Using the blind filter (the filter with no
holes) replace the single Portafilter basket
with the "blind filter". Put the
group handle with the blind filter into the
group head (just like you were going to brew
a shot).
Pull the handle up and let the pump run approximately
7 to 8 seconds, you will hear the pump noise
change to a higher pitched sound, then return
the handle to the off position. Repeat this
procedure 3 or 4 times.
When you remove the group handle, you will
see all the coffee grounds that were "stuck
up" on the gasket and shower. Repeat
until the water is clear.
Cleaning your espresso machine on a regular
basis will keep it in top-notch condition
and provide you with years of great freshly
brewed espresso!
